The brake drum is the rotating cast-iron bowl that your drum brake shoes press against to slow your vehicle. Mounted to the rear axle hub, it spins with the wheel and provides the friction surface that the shoes contact under braking. Unlike brake rotors, which can be visually inspected from outside the wheel on many vehicles, brake drums fully enclose the shoe assembly, which means wear and damage often goes unnoticed until braking performance is noticeably affected.
A brake drum is a bowl-shaped iron casting that bolts to the rear axle hub and rotates with the wheel. The brake shoe assemblies sit on a fixed backing plate inside the drum, out of sight. When the brakes are applied, the wheel cylinder forces the curved shoes outward against the smooth inner bore of the spinning drum. The kinetic energy of the rotating drum is converted to heat, which is conducted through the drum wall and dissipated into the surrounding air, which is why drum brake cooling is more dependent on driving pauses than rotors, which are exposed to direct airflow.
Standard OEM-grade cast-iron drums are manufactured to the original equipment diameter, wall thickness, and surface finish specification for your vehicle. They are the direct replacement for the factory drum with no modification required.
Coated brake drums feature a corrosion-resistant coating applied to the external drum surfaces, the hat section, outer wall, and wheel mounting face. Surface rust is a common issue on drum brake vehicles in Canada, particularly during periods of non-use in winter when moisture and salt collect inside the wheel well. A coated drum resists surface rust that can transfer to the wheel mounting face, making future drum removal significantly easier, a practical advantage that saves time and prevents damage on the next brake service.
Brake drum replacement requires matching the correct inner diameter, wall thickness, bolt circle, hub bore, and drum offset for your vehicle, errors in any of these dimensions produce incorrect shoe-to-drum clearance, uneven wear, and braking problems. Our vehicle selector eliminates those risks by confirming the correct drum for your exact year, make, model, and axle. Coated drum options are available for vehicles with heavy salt exposure or those that sit unused for extended winter periods.
Q: How long do brake drums last?
A: Brake drums typically last 150,000 to 200,000 kilometres with periodic resurfacing, significantly longer than disc brake rotors. Each resurfacing removes material and reduces wall thickness. Once the drum reaches its maximum allowable inner diameter, it must be replaced rather than turned again.
Q: Should I replace brake drums in pairs?
A: Yes. Replace both drums on the same axle to maintain balanced braking. Drums of different inner diameters or surface conditions on the same axle create uneven friction forces, causing the vehicle to pull to the fresher-drum side during braking.
Q: Should I replace drums and shoes at the same time?
A: Yes, it is strongly recommended. New shoes on a scored or out-of-round drum wear unevenly from day one. New drums with old shoes that have worn to match the old drum surface will contact the new bore incorrectly. Replacing both together ensures proper break-in and maximum service life from both components.
